Starting Medicare

Start Medicare with a primary-care plan.

Choose a local office, verify your exact coverage, and prepare for your first appointment without guessing what comes next.

Have your Medicare and health-plan cards nearby. We verify participation before scheduling.

A step-by-step decision

Establish care when your Medicare coverage begins.

You do not have to wait until you are sick to identify a primary-care office. Coverage rules vary, so confirm the effective date and network shown on your cards.

Know your coverage start date

Your Medicare card and any health-plan card may show different information. Call the plan for enrollment questions and call our office to verify participation before scheduling. See Medicare’s plan enrollment guidance.

Decide whether to keep your doctor

Ask your current doctor and your plan whether the clinician remains in network under your new coverage. If you choose a new office, a change in doctor does not always require a change in insurance.

Prepare the first appointment

Bring photo identification, insurance cards, a medication list, specialist contacts, and previous primary-care information. An appointment request is not a confirmed booking; staff will confirm the date and time.

Understand the Welcome to Medicare visit

The “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit has specific timing and coverage rules and is not the same as every new-patient or problem-focused appointment. Review Medicare’s official explanation and ask the office what visit fits your needs.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can I keep my current doctor when Medicare starts?

Often, but it depends on the clinician and the network for your exact coverage. Confirm with both the plan and the doctor’s office.

Does requesting a call schedule an appointment?

No. It asks clinic staff to contact you. An appointment is confirmed only after staff provides a date and time.
